As the Webcos march forward with increasingly compelling services, Telcos are faced with the real danger of becoming infrastructure providers only. Whilst the Telcos have been concentrating on building high capacity broadband networks, the Webcos have been able to concentrate on what they do best, and that is to focus on services that match end customer needs.

As a result, Telcos have had very little involvement in the massive growth in social networking sites and peer to peer voice applications over the past 12-18 months other than to provide the underlying broadband infrastructure and connectivity. They are now beginning to realise that should his trend continue without more active involvement at the service delivery layer, it is likely that they will lose significant market share and suffer erosion of margins and loss of revenue.
