Welcome to the latest edition of the Aepona Newsletter. In this issue, we focus on Aepona’s growing position with the Service Delivery Platform market and in particular how Telecom Web Services, the means by which telecoms operators can embrace the Internet service innovation model, enable the realisation of a next-generation Service Delivery Platform which we will refer to as SDP 2.0.

SDP 2.0 – a new architecture for the “Long Tail”
In keeping with the current trend of using the “2.0” label to describe how technologies are evolving to address current market dynamics, Aepona is using the term SDP 2.0 to define a new architecture for Service Delivery Platforms that allows operators to fully exploit the “Long Tail” effect which characterises how many Internet and Telco service providers make money in today’s market.
The Long Tail is a term used to describe certain business and economic models in which the accumulative sales value of niche or specialist products exceeds that of the most popular products. At Aepona, our view is that Service Delivery Platform architectures need to change fundamentally to address this new model, and we have announced new features on our Telecom Web Services solution that enable this new architecture. There’s more on these new features below.
At the recent Telco 2.0 event in London Kieran Dalton, Aepona’s Chief Technology Officer, described this new architecture to an audience of operators, vendors, industry analysts and press, and participated in a lively debate with the audience and co-panellists following his presentation.
Michael Crossey, Aepona’s VP of Marketing, penned an article for the Telco 2.0 Blog to coincide with the event, in which he described the impact the Long Tail was having on SDP architectures and how Aepona is addressing this need.

This theme was also covered in an article featuring Aepona by Tim McElligott of Telephony Online, in which the author describes how Service Providers are increasingly turning to Service-Oriented Architectures and Web Services to enable the transition from legacy network technologies and business models towards a more open platform that embraces the Web 2.0 model.

Aepona chosen by TELUS of Canada for its Service Delivery Framework initiative
Aepona recently announced its selection by TELUS, against strong competition from both IT and network-centric vendors, for the Canadian operator’s Service Delivery Framework initiative. TELUS is a pioneering Service Provider that is embracing the concepts described above to fully realise the value of its network assets, by exposing them to third-party application providers and Enterprise customers in a controlled, secure, billable and simple manner.
Under the terms of the contract, Aepona will deploy its Telecom Web Services solution, which is built on our highly successful Universal Service Platform, together with network integration services.

Telecom Web Services: Service Delivery Made Easy
Underpinning the SDP 2.0 are modern, standards-based and product-oriented IT technologies and concepts, rather than legacy, proprietary, bespoke systems integration projects. Telecom Web Services are one of the key technologies that enable the SDP 2.0.
Aepona has recently published two white papers describing Telecom Web Services and the critical role that they play in transforming the business model of Telecommunication Service Providers.
In the first of these, we provide an overview of Service Oriented Architecture and Web Services in general before describing how Web Services are being realised in the Telecoms domain.
The paper can be viewed and downloaded here
In the second paper, we discuss the practical issues surrounding the deployment of a Telecom Web Services platform, in particular 3rd party management, policy control, management framework, and how Aepona’s solution is addressing these issues.

Aepona Announces New Features for its Telecom Web Services platform
At the CTIA trade show, which took place in Orlando FLA. in March, Aepona announced new platform features specifically designed to allow Service Providers to address the Long Tail model described above. These new features enable third parties to access network resources in a “light touch”, highly automated fashion, expanding the pool of application developers that can utilise these exposed resources from tens to thousands. This in turn facilitates the creation of a much broader range of innovative, targeted, specialised and therefore valuable services.
